Why is looking after your bones today so important for later in life?
A young body makes new bone faster than it breaks down old bone which in turn increases bone mass. Most people reach their peak bone mass by the age of 30. This process will continue after that, but you will lose more bone mass than you gain. This is when Osteoporosis can become an issue.
How likely you are to develop Osteoporosis depends on how much bone mass you retain and how rapidly you lose it after you have reached your peak. The higher your peak bone mass, the more bone you have “in reserve” and the less likely you are to develop Osteoporosis as you age. However, there is a drastic fall in bone mass in females post menopause. Osteoporosis is more common in females than in males. So how do we control this?
Plenty of Calcium, Vitamin D and physical activity will help to look after your bones. People who are physically inactive have a higher risk of Osteoporosis than do their more-active counterparts. Loading the bones by doing weight bearing exercises is clinically proven to increase bone mass. Clinical Pilates is a fantastic way of building strength muscle mass to assist in preventing Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis.
