Mastitis Treatment
Mastitis Treatment and Relief through Physiotherapy
What is it?
Mastitis is inflammation of the breast tissue that can cause pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. It is a very common condition in breastfeeding women. Mastitis can develop very quickly, causing flu-like symptoms, discomfort, and challenges with breastfeeding. Physiotherapy, particularly with therapeutic ultrasound, can assist in clearing blockages, reducing inflammation, and alleviating pain. Early intervention is key to effectively manage mastitis and prevent more severe symptoms.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain, warmth, and swelling in the affected breast, usually in a specific area
- Redness or tender lumps in the breast, often where milk ducts are blocked
- Flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, and body aches
- Pain and difficulty during breastfeeding or pumping, often with reduced milk flow
- Hard, painful areas within the breast that do not soften after feeding or pumping
- Tenderness or sensitivity in the breast, even when not breastfeeding
Common Conditions
- Blocked milk ducts: When milk is not fully drained from the breast, blockages can occur, leading to inflammation and pain.
- Bacterial infection: Bacteria from the baby's mouth can enter through cracked or sore nipples, leading to infection and worsening inflammation.
- Breast engorgement: If the breasts become overfull, especially in the early stages of breastfeeding, milk flow can become obstructed, increasing the risk of mastitis.
- Poor latch or breastfeeding technique: If the baby does not latch correctly, milk may not be fully emptied from the breast, leading to milk stagnation and potential blockages.
- Tight or restrictive clothing: Tight bras or clothing that compress the breast can contribute to blocked ducts and discomfort.
- Infrequent feeding: Long gaps between feedings can lead to milk buildup, creating an environment for blockages and inflammation.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
- Therapeutic ultrasound to unblock milk ducts, reduce inflammation, and promote healing in the affected breast area
- Gentle breast massage techniques to improve milk flow and relieve blockages, performed by the physiotherapist or taught to the mother for self-management
- Education on proper breastfeeding techniques to encourage complete emptying of the breast and avoid recurrent blockages
- Self-care guidance, including warm compresses before feeding to facilitate milk flow and cold compresses afterward to reduce pain and swelling
- Hydration and rest advice to support overall recovery, as well as tips on managing feeding frequency to prevent engorgement
- Ergonomic advice for breastfeeding positions to minimise strain on the neck, shoulders, and arms while supporting the affected breast
