Neck and Thoracic Pain
Physiotherapy for Neck and Thoracic Pain in Breastfeeding Mothers
What is it?
Neck and thoracic pain is very common among breastfeeding mothers due to prolonged, often awkward postures while feeding and carrying bub. Breastfeeding and bottle feeding both typically involve holding the baby close, bending forward, or frequently looking down, which places strain on the neck, shoulders, and upper back muscles. Over time, this can lead to discomfort, stiffness, and even headaches. Addressing posture and reducing muscular tensioncan significantly improve breastfeeding comfort and reduce pain.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain or tension in the neck, upper back, and shoulder areas
- Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the neck, particularly when turning the head
- Headaches, often originating from the neck or shoulder tension
- Shoulder aches and discomfort spreading down the upper arms
- Fatigue and general discomfort after breastfeeding sessions
- Tingling or numbness in the arms and hands due to prolonged awkward positioning
Common Conditions
- Prolonged forward or downward posture: Maintaining a rounded shoulder position or bending forward can strain the neck and upper back muscles.
- Weakness in postural muscles: The upper back and shoulder stabilisers may weaken over time, leading to poor support and increased strain.
- Muscle strain from holding the baby in repetitive positions: Holding the baby in similar positions for extended periods places continuous stress on certain muscle groups.
- Lack of ergonomic support: Without proper support for the back, arms, and neck during breastfeeding, strain increases on the upper body.
- Increased demands on the body: Physical fatigue from caring for a newborn can contribute to muscle tension and discomfort.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
- Postural assessments and ergonomic guidance to set up comfortable breastfeeding positions that support the neck, shoulders, and back
- Gentle stretching exercises to alleviate tightness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back
- Strengthening exercises for postural muscles, including the upper back and shoulder stabilisers, to support proper alignment
- Soft tissue techniques and massage therapy to release muscle tension and improve mobility in the neck and upper back
- Education on movement breaks and simple exercises to perform between breastfeeding sessions to prevent muscle stiffness
- Advice on ergonomic breastfeeding supports like pillows, cushions, and chair adjustments to help mothers maintain relaxed, pain-free positions
