Muscle Sprains and Tears
Comprehensive Physiotherapy for Muscle Sprains and Tears
What is it?
Common muscles that we regularly treat from sporting injuries are hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, groins, hip flexors and rotator cuff injuries.
Muscle strains and tears often occur from overstretching, sudden movements, or overuse, leading to pain, weakness, and sometimes visible bruising or swelling. Symptoms can include sharp pain at the time of injury, muscle tightness, and limited range of motion in the affected area.
A strained muscle is essentially an “overstretched” muscle. It is optimal to manage this effectively so it doesn’t become a tear, requiring more downtime. A muscle tear can be either partial (is still connected to the bone) or full (muscle now detached from the bone). These are more serious, requiring longer rehabilitation and downtime.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
- Initial management to reduce swelling and pain (e.g., RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
- Progressive strengthening exercises to restore function and prevent re-injury
- Stretching and flexibility training to improve muscle resilience
- Education on proper warm-up and movement techniques to avoid strain
- Manual therapy to alleviate pain and reduce muscle tightness
