Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow
Physiotherapy for Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow
What is it?
Repetitive overuse of the forearm muscles can cause inflammation and pain in the tendons around the elbow. These conditions are common in racket sports, manual labor, and occupations that require repetitive arm movements.
Common Conditions
- Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Causes pain on the outside of the elbow due to repetitive strain, often from racket sports and activities that involve wrist extension.
- Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Similar to tennis elbow, but affects the tendons on the inside of the elbow, caused by activities that involve wrist flexion.
- Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa (small fluid-filled sacs) around the elbow, often due to repetitive pressure on the joint.
- Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the ulnar nerve near the elbow, leading to tingling and numbness in the ring and little fingers.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
- Strengthening and stretching exercises for forearm muscles
- Manual therapy and massage to relieve pain and reduce tension
- Activity modification education to prevent strain on the elbow tendons
- Ergonomic adjustments to improve posture and alignment during activities
- Taping or bracing to support the elbow joint during recovery
